Reindeer in Ohio

Reindeer aren’t found just at the North Pole.  There is a growing number of Santa Claus’ favorite animal now living in the Buckeye State.  Real live reindeer herds can be found at several locations in Ohio.  We recently visited the one at Sell’s Christmas Farm near Wakeman, in Huron County.

Alan and Pat Sell have been in the reindeer business for thirteen years.  They started with two and they now have eleven of the small deer with the great big antlers and their herd is growing.  And, just like Santa, they know the name of every one of their deer.  There is “Jingle” and “Bell”, “Rythym”, “Blues”, “Starr”, “Holly”, “Lucy”, “Selltic” “Baby Holly”, “Zeke” and “Rascal.”  The Sells traditionally let their customers pick the names of their reindeer.

On the day of our visit Alan, wearing a Sami reindeer herdsman’s hat, was strolling the grounds of their Christmas tree farm with “Holly”, a 9-year old female reindeer, that he uses in many of the shows and appearances he makes each year across Ohio and around the region.   Alan said, “We do fifteen to twenty shows each Christmas season at shopping centers, nursing homes, town ceremonies, tree lightings, private homes, just about anyplace you can think of.”

In fact he does a fairly brisk business on Christmas Eve when he contracts to deliver presents strapped onto the back of a live reindeer right to the door of some lucky kids home.  It costs $400 for this unique gift delivery service /
