Teapots and China

A cold late-winter day is a great time to take a One Tank Trip to just over the border in southeast Ohio to Newell, West Virginia to visit the Homer Laughlin China Company.

Now while you may have never heard of the Homer Laughlin China Company chances are you have eaten off of one of their products.  Homer Laughlin is one of America’s leading makers of foodservice china and the sprawling plant beside the Ohio River is the home of Fiestaware, popular with collectors of Ohio Valley-made china.

Here’s the best part if you visit Monday through Friday and make a reservation before you visit you can take a factory tour and watch the intricate process that creates their famous dinnerware.

There is also a small museum of their product that includes some china made for a President of the United States.

If you are a bargain hunter a stop at the Homer Laughlin Company Store at the entrance to the factory is a must.  Here you will find “seconds”, slightly imperfect products that couldn’t be shipped to stores, as well as discontinued pieces and some rare limited production Fiestaware.

The retail store is open seven days a week, except major holidays.

Home Laughlin China is located at 672 Fiesta Drive in Newell, West Virginia, just across the river from East Liverpool, Ohio.  The phone number is: 800-452-4462, or you can visit them at their website, http://www.fiestafactorydirect.com

While you are in the East Liverpool area you might also want to drive by the “World’s largest teapot” in Chester, West Virginia, near the bridge to East Liverpool, Ohio.

The teapot started life as a root beer stand, later was converted into a pottery salesroom and has stood vacant for many years but is kept painted by the community because it has become a landmark along US Route 30 in Chester.

It’s a fun One Tank Trip for February.
